BIG Update!

We recently purchased $29,200 worth of instruments for $11,650. We now own an additional 21 instruments for people to play, both to provide concert horns when needed and to be able to field an additional 6 sousaphones, 4 mellophones, 3 marching baritones, and 2 more snare drums in pep band!
For new members who want to join but do not own a horn - which in the last year we saw 9 people leave or be unable to join us for this reason - we can now provide:

- Clarinet
- Bass clarinet
- Tenor sax
- French horn
- Trombone

Honorary Artistic Society

The Oak Lawn Band is proud to announce that we have inducted our first two members into the Honorary Artistic Society. Individuals who have proven their dedication to the highest levels of musical achievement may be nominated to receive this award and distinction. There were many people that met these requirements, but there were two people who have stood out.

Mason Tripp and Dr. Ellen Kaner have been nominated and were inducted into the Oak Lawn Band Honorary Artistic Society on December 16th, 2023.

Founding member, section manager, and more
Dear Oak Lawn Band Board,

Thank you so much for the honorary Artistic Society Membership award that was presented to me at the concert. It is with much heartfelt appreciation that I accepted the award. It means so much to me. I look back over my life and I cannot even imagine taking the journey that I have been on without the Oak Lawn Band. It has been a love affair from the first moment I heard the words ‘Why don’t you come and play with the Oak Lawn Band’ back on July 4, 1980. I was at the next rehearsal and have missed very few since then.

I look at our current board and see a wonderful group of people and one of the best boards that the band has had. It is so refreshing to see such a spirit of working together as y’all have shown. It makes all the difference seeing the growth of the band due to this cooperative spirit and I think the band members notice this and it is catching as I have never witnessed so many people chipping in to help with getting things accomplished and showing great excitement and enthusiasm while doing so.

If I had to sum up all my years with the band in one word, I think I would use the word Love. Love of music, love of community, love of chosen family, love of justice, love of pride in accomplishment, love of home as the band is my home.

I think that I can speak for all the founders and all the people who have followed that have kept the dream alive, in saying, thank you OLB board and OLB members. I know that past members who are not with us anymore are proud the Oak Lawn Band has endured and is thriving, even in this present world of hate and adversity. They fought hard for this dream, and you are keeping that fight going.

Finally, I would like to thank the board for your courage in having a drag queen for our concert MC. The band has had a long history of having drag queens as MC’s, especially through the 1980’s and 90’s. I think it is important to stand with our community as hate tries to tear us all down. I sincerely hope that we can work with all aspects of the LGBTQ+ community to continue to provide a safe space and to promote unity for we must all stand together to be free.

Yours most sincerely,

Mason Tripp

Dr. Ellen Kaner

Past section manager, past board member, and more
Hello Current Board Members:

With every concert we play, I find myself reflecting on the progress the Oak Lawn Band has made over the years. There have been numerous times in our history when I feared that our band would not be able to continue, either because of its small size, shortage of funds, difficulty finding rehearsal space, or whatever. The past several years have seen amazing progress, largely due to those of you who are currently on the Board and other very special people who have joined, stayed, or returned in recent years! We have grown in size, scope, level of performance, variety of people and musical styles - I can't say enough!

I have performed in many other ensembles in my 32 years in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and the Oak Lawn Band is the one that has meant the most to me. Needless to say, I was thrilled to receive the Honorary Artistic Society membership the other night. But even without recognition, I would and will continue to commit to the band, its mission, and the special kind of people who are members of our band family.

Keep up the great work, and don't hesitate to ask for help as you continue to lead us through this unique season! I look forward to seeing what direction we will go from here!

-Ellen Kaner

AIDS Quilt

The AIDS Memorial Quilt (also known as the Names Project) was born in the 1980’s as a vision of San Francisco activists and had one of its early displays in 1987 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. with 1,920 panels. More recently the quilt has grown to more than 50,000 panels and can only be displayed virtually.

The Oak Lawn Band has helped create two panels in memory of its members (and members of the Turtle Creek Chorale) who have passed. We are honored to be part of this moving and important piece of history, and we support the maintenance of the panels by sending annual donations to the organization.

For a number of years the Oak Lawn Band has had a tradition of collecting money each January and February in the hopes of putting together a donation of at least $250 to the AIDS Quilt. We know that it costs over $100 per panel to maintain the quilt. If you have never attended a display of the quilt, you will be amazed at the powerful experience that it can be. You may make your donation below, please notate that your donation is for the AIDS Quilt
