Press Release: Oak Lawn Band Presents "Ascend"

5th Annual March for Freedom Concert Celebrates Resilience

DALLAS, May 25, 2018 — The Oak Lawn Band will present “Ascend” its fifth annual March for Freedom concert June 24 at the Latino Cultural Center.

This free family-friendly event will feature a music that honors the strength of the human spirit. The band will also present its Pillar of Freedom award — an honor given to outstanding philanthropic commitment to Dallas’ LGBT community.

Some of the pieces performed will be “Angels in the Architecture” by Frank Ticheli, “Into the Clouds” b Richard L. Saucedo, “To Challenge the Sky and Heavens Above,” by Robert W. Smith, and “In Times of Triumph” by James Swearingen. The concert will also feature vocal soloists Donald Jones and Jodi Crawford Wright.

“This concert honors everyday heroes of the past and today and how they overcame difficulty,” said Oak Lawn Band Artistic Director Marc Dunbar. “Whether it’s battling racism, homophobia, sexism, or even personal struggles, the capacity to soar above the problems and thrive is something to be celebrated.”

About Oak Lawn Band

Since 1980, the Oak Lawn Band has served the DFW community performing both locally and nationally. As a founding member of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association (LGBA), the Oak Lawn Band has performed at the presidential inauguration ceremonies of Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, the Gay Games, the March on Washington, and other historic events.
