First Notes With the Oak Lawn Band

August 25, 2017

We've been busy at the Oak Lawn Band as our 2017-2018 Season kicks off!  Three rehearsals into the season, we've had a great showing of new and old faces alike.  There's still time to join us for our first concert on October 21st.  Here are some highlights from our first night back together.

Our Directors of Membership Audrey Schwartz and Leah Beth Kolni were ready to welcome performers back from the summer.   Audrey (pictured on the right) and Leah Beth were ready with markers and smiles in the Oak Lawn United Methodist Church Welcome Center to help make stand and name tags for our new and returning members.

Ever wonder where those messages go when you first contact us about playing with the band?  Our "Membership Mamas" are our first contact with potential new performers.  They help get  newcomers' information to section leaders so that music and space is ready for their first rehearsal with us.  Our players had folders of music ready and waiting for them at rehearsal!

After getting names and introductions sorted, we kicked off this season with sectionals.  Our section managers helped read through some of our October pieces such as Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance and Movement IV of Pines of Rome, The Pines of the Appian Way, by Ottorino Respighi.  Pictured on the left is our Clarinet section lead by Dr. Ellen Kaner as they worked worked their way through some of the tricky sixteenth note runs in Incantation.

Meanwhile, Tony Daniel lead a large brass and low woodwind sectional (pictured below).  This group spent some time reading through the proud, booming rhythms of victorious marching Romans in Pines.  Tony is also one of our Directors of Marketing and Public Relations and this season can be found with the low woodwinds on Contrabass Clarinet.

Our band is made up of a mix of amateur and professional players.   We're band directors, nurses, barristas, lawyers - anyone who loves to play!  We welcome players of all skill levels.  We strive to build concert lineups which are accessible but also give us a challenging goal to exercise and grow our skills and abilities.  Our interim Artistic Director, Lauren Yacht, has done a great job preparing such a lineup with pieces ranging from arrangements of The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Phantom of the Opera to odd metered Night on Fire by John Mackey.  Trust us, weve got quite a show coming to you in October!

Speaking of new Interim ADs, keep an eye out for an upcoming post with a Q&A with Lauren Yacht.  Until then, remember, it's always #betterwiththeband!
