How do I audition?
NO AUDITIONS!!! All we ask is that you have some familiarity and competence with
your instrument. Talent levels in the band range from "a little rusty" to professional.
What is the age range?
Literally from 20-65. Every age should feel pretty comfortable and find at least one other band member
he or she would consider an age peer. Also, the men to women ratio is roughly 60/40 at any given
time. You won't be the only one of your gender in the band.
Where is practice?
OLB rehearses every Monday night 7:30pm to 9:30pm at New Hope Fellowship
Church, 2438 Butler, Dallas, Texas.
Can I get a ride?
Sure. Several dedicated band members are available. Call us at 214 621-8998.
How many people are in the band?
The number truly varies. The range can go from10-35 in any given rehearsal, with a typical number being
around 25.
What is the attendance expectation?
We ask that you attend as many rehearsals as you can. Members who expect to play
in a concert must attend a minimum of one rehearsal and the dress rehearsal
prior to the concert. In addition, the artistic director makes final decisions about participation - both in concerts overall as well
as on individual parts.
What if some members are a little "rustier" than others? How is that treated?
No one is ever singled out in a rehearsal to be criticized for their playing ability. Senior section
members offer some guidance when appropriate, but negative criticism is highly discouraged.
The artistic director has final say over who participates in individual passages etc. If cuts or adjustments
in parts are necessary they are handled discreetly on an individual basis.
Does it cost to join?
Your first month is free, then band dues are $5 per month.
You give concerts in t-shirts?
Well, no. Those are for outside events. Concert attire is as follows;
Starched white, long-sleeve tux shirt [or button down]
Black bow tie
Black slacks
Black shoes and hosiery
OR
Black concert dress or skirt/blouse
Dark hosiery
Black shoes
What about the membership representation?
OLB elects a board of officers annually by democratic process. Officers operate all business
aspects of the band and hold meetings monthly, as well as ad hoc if necessary. Anyone can
nominate or run as a band officer. The officers' group operates by an established set of by-laws. Additionally,
any band member is welcome to attend any officer's meeting as they are all open.
Participation is encouraged - it's part of the fun!
